BACKGROUND Jazmin Magazine has become to be as a direct result of the influence media has had in American society. The people of America are often influenced by what they hear or see through the various media resources of society; TV, radio, music videos, movies, magazines, advertisements, etc. The media is exuding messages and images of sex, politics, men, money, God, family and body image and are too often dictating the way women see themselves and the world. When looking at most of the magazines marketed towards young women there is a lack of honesty and vulnerability in regards to the real issues women face in their life. Jazmin Magazine staff feel it's time for real voices from real women to arise and shed some positive light on some of the issues women face in today's world. Jazmin Magazine is always a compilation of real stories from real women. Through these stories, our readers will learn to overcome life’s everyday battles.
HISTORY Jazmin Magazine started as a small dream in 2007. Tara Werneke (Editor in Chief) founded this magazine with her passion to join the media in today's world in order to be a voice of truth to young women. In July 2007, the idea of Jazmin Magazine was pitched to the staff of a youth ministry of 700 teenagers in Minneapolis, MN. Because of budgeting limitations the magazine was denied as a ministry their organization could support. Moving forward with the idea as an independent organization, others who shared similar passions began to join with Tara to transform this vision to reality. From July 2007 to December 2007 Jazmin Magazine went from one single staff member to six official members including editors and writers. After publishing the first online issue of Jazmin Magazine the staff grew from six members to its current status of 40; including editors, writers, chair persons, publicist, photographers, graphic designers, and other media specialists. Since February 2008 of first becoming a website, Jazmin has had two issues (brief description of each issue) officially published, the third will be published April 14, 2009. Issues are currently being published every four months. From the time Jazmin Magazine has started to publish online issues (August 2008) the website has had over 25,000 online hits (regular/unique) mostly from Minnesota, Illinois, California, Florida and New York.
VISION Jazmin is a magazine for young women to teach them to love God and love themselves. Every female struggles with her image at one time or another. They compare themselves with the cover girls who appear perfect. They desire everyone's approval. They need to realize they are lovely inside and out. They should understand it is impossible to live up to their own expectations of perfect. They can discover the girls they thought were flawless on the covers of magazines look in the mirror and don't feel good enough either. The purpose of Jazmin Magazine is to relate to the reader, let her know she's not alone in whatever she may be going through and teach her to be a healthy woman in today's world regardless of the popular media. The pressure to be perfect is intense and this is why there are so many young women who struggle with eating disorders, abuse, cutting, etc. and we, as Jazmin staff, think something needs to be done.
